Career prediction by date of birth: what your chart really uses
A Vedic chart does not hand you one "best career". It shows what kind of work suits you, where effort pays, and when the periods for change and growth run. Here is what an astrologer looks at, and how HeyKundli answers your own career question from your computed chart.
What the chart looks at
- The 10th house (karma bhava)
- The house of work, status and public role. The sign on it, planets in it and planets aspecting it describe the nature of your work.
- The 10th lord
- Where the ruler of the 10th sits shows where your career draws its strength: in the 7th through partners and clients, in the 9th through teaching or guidance, in the 12th through foreign or behind-the-scenes work.
- The 6th and 2nd houses
- The 6th is service, employment and competition (jobs and exams); the 2nd and 11th are earnings and gains from work.
- The D10 (dashamsha)
- The divisional chart for career. Classical astrologers confirm a 10th-house promise in the D10 before trusting it.
- Saturn and the Sun
- Saturn is the natural significator of work and discipline; the Sun of authority, government and recognition. Their strength colours how you rise.
- Planets by field
- Mercury trade, writing and analysis; Jupiter teaching, law and advice; Mars engineering, sport and uniformed service; Venus arts, design and luxury; Rahu technology, foreign firms and new fields.
Job or business?
The 6th house (service) and the 10th together point to employment; a strong 7th house (trade, partners) and 3rd house (initiative) linked to the 10th point to business. Many charts show both, with different periods favouring each.
HeyKundli reads these links from your computed chart and says which ones it found, rather than giving a label. Ask "job or business for me?" and the answer names the houses and lords behind it.
Government job (sarkari naukri) in the chart
Classical texts tie government work to the Sun, the 10th house and the 6th house of service, with Saturn for long service. A strong Sun linked to the 10th or its lord, and the 6th lord well placed, are the usual signs looked for.
A chart can show the inclination and the better periods for exams and applications. It cannot promise a selection: that is effort, preparation and the exam itself.
The 10th lord in each house
Where the ruler of your 10th house sits is one of the first things read for career. These are the classical tendencies; the rest of the chart confirms or changes them.
- In the 1st houseSelf-made work tied to your own name and effort; reputation follows you personally.
- In the 2nd houseEarnings and family business, finance, food or speech; the career builds lasting wealth.
- In the 3rd houseCommunication, media, writing, sales and short travel; work grows from initiative.
- In the 4th houseWork near home, in property, vehicles, education or agriculture; comfort matters to the career.
- In the 5th houseCreative, advisory, teaching or investment work; recognition through intelligence.
- In the 6th houseService and employment, healthcare, law and competitive fields; steady jobs over business.
- In the 7th houseBusiness, partnerships and clients; work that faces the public or crosses borders.
- In the 8th houseResearch, insurance, investigation and hidden work; careers with phases of upheaval and renewal.
- In the 9th houseTeaching, law, religion and long-distance work; mentors and fortune shape the path.
- In the 10th houseA strong, self-directed career with leadership and visible status.
- In the 11th houseGains through networks and large organisations; income that grows with your circle.
- In the 12th houseWork abroad, in hospitals, multinationals or behind the scenes; spending linked to work.
When: how the timing is read
Career events are timed with the Vimshottari dasha: the periods of the 10th lord, of planets in the 10th, and of the D10's strong planets tend to bring change, promotion or a new role.
Transits refine the window: Jupiter or Saturn crossing the 10th house, the 10th lord or the Moon sign are watched for openings and for slower phases. HeyKundli computes your dashas down to sookshma and today's transits, and shows the dates it used.
Why date of birth alone isn't enough
Most "career and job prediction by date of birth" tools read only your Sun sign or a number from your birth date. A Vedic chart needs more: the ascendant (lagna) changes sign about every two hours, and with it every house, so the house that speaks for career and job depends on your birth time and place.
With an exact time, every house and its lord is fixed. With an approximate time, HeyKundli says which conclusions hold anyway (signs of slow planets, most dasha dates) and which depend on the minutes. With no time at all, it reads the Moon chart (Chandra lagna) and says so.
Every position, house, divisional chart and dasha date on HeyKundli is computed by the engine (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, historical time zones). The AI astrologer explains what was computed and cites it; it never calculates a position or a date itself, so the facts do not change between answers. How we compute.
What an answer looks like
Example question: “Is a job change favourable in the next 12 months?”
An answer cites what it uses, for example: "Your 10th lord Saturn sits in the 7th [H10, H7], so work grows through clients and partners. Your Jupiter–Mercury period runs to March 2027 [MD, AD]; Mercury rules your 10th in the D10, so this stretch favours a move in your field, with Jupiter's transit of your 10th from June adding opportunities." Each tag opens the placement or period it refers to.
An illustration of the format, not a reading: your own answer uses your computed chart and dates.
Common misconceptions
- “One planet decides your whole career.”
- The 10th house, its lord, the D10 and the running dasha are read together; one planet only colours them.
- “Your birth date alone gives your profession.”
- The 10th house depends on the ascendant, which needs your birth time and place.
- “A "bad" dasha means losing your job.”
- A slower period asks for patience and consolidation; HeyKundli describes it without fear and never predicts dismissal.

Questions people ask
Can I get a career prediction by date of birth alone?
Only a rough one. The houses that describe career depend on the ascendant, which changes every two hours, so a birth time is needed for a reliable reading. Without it HeyKundli reads your Moon chart and says what it cannot know.
Which house is for career in Vedic astrology?
The 10th house, read with its lord, the planets in and aspecting it, the 6th house for jobs and the D10 (dashamsha) chart.
How is the timing of a job change read?
From the Vimshottari dasha (periods of the 10th lord and of planets linked to the 10th) and from Jupiter and Saturn transits over the 10th house and the Moon sign.
