Questions parents ask

How is a baby’s name syllable worked out?

The Moon at birth stands in one of the 27 nakshatras, in one of its four padas, and the Avakahada chakra gives each pada a syllable: 108 in all. The Moon’s position is the Swiss Ephemeris’s, on the Lahiri ayanamsa.

What if the birth time is not known?

The Moon crosses a pada in about six hours, so the finder shows every pada it passed through that day (or around an approximate time), with each one’s syllable.

Must the name begin with that syllable?

It is a tradition, not a rule. Many families accept any of the nakshatra’s four syllables, and many choose a name they love.

When is the naming ceremony held?

Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, or on the next good day: a gentle, swift, movable or fixed nakshatra, on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
